MCV issue 353 (9 September 2005)

Here's another issue of British trade weekly MCV. This is the second of a consecutive run of 17 issues that I'll be scanning over the coming months, running from September 2005 to the end of December — a period that includes the launch of the Xbox 360, the European release of the PSP, and the first public demo of the Wiimote.

In this issue:

  • Sony's PSP launches and sells 185,000 units in the UK in the first weekend... more than double that of the Nintendo DS, which previously held the record.
  • Microsoft pledges to 'put the game back into Windows', a platform that had no shortage of games, with the unlamented Games for Windows initiative.
  • Future, Highbury, Imagine and Emap were all invited to Nintendo to pitch for the rights to Official Nintendo Magazine! You won't find that on Wikipedia. (Future's bid won.)
  • Leading the all-formats chart this week is a new entry: Ridge Racer PSP. In fact, PSP launch titles make up 80% of the Top 10. Lumines, the actual best launch title, comes in twelfth.
