MCV issue 356 (29 September 2005)

Here's another issue of British trade weekly MCV. This is the fifth of a consecutive run of 17 unpreserved issues that I'll be scanning over the coming months, running from September 2005 to the end of December — a period that includes the launch of the Xbox 360, the European release of the PSP, and the first public demo of the Wiimote.

In this issue:

• It's the 10th anniversary of the UK launch of the first PlayStation. Retailers reflect on how it turned them from niche retailers to successful ones. The joke's on them, though: in another couple of decades Sony will do the opposite.
• Industry figures pay effusive tribute to Chris Deering's leadership of Sony Europe throughout that decade.
• Gizmondo announces a widescreen model of their handheld machine. The story of why the company failed before this device came out is much too wild to fit in this post.
• Korean company Gamepark launches the Linux-based GP2X, intended for specialist users. Wait, was this the first emulation handheld?
• Nintendo expects Nintendogs will be the DS's breakout moment in the UK, and hope it will top the Christmas charts. (They'll be disappointed.)
• Martin Spiess is appointed the new MD of Midway Europe. Storm's coming.
• Leading the all-formats chart this week: a new entry, Burnout Revenge. Meteos unseats Super Mario 64 DS on the DS chart, while the budget PC chart is topped by... London Racer? This is a Davilex, I know this!
