MCV issue 358 (14 October 2005)

Here's another issue of British trade weekly MCV. This is the seventh of a consecutive run of 17 unpreserved issues that I'll be scanning over the coming months, running from September 2005 to the end of December — a period that includes the launch of the Xbox 360, the European release of the PSP, and the first public demo of the Wiimote.

In this issue:

  • With rumoured Sony delays, Microsoft execs hope for two clear Xmases for the 360 with no competition from the PS3. They will, indeed, get them, in Europe at least.
  • Nintendogs' launch causes a 358% spike in sales of the DS.
  • Asha Sharma got some flak this year for saying Xbox was going to reach a billion people. But in an interview here with J Allard, he says he made the exact same claim at E3 2005. Well, would you look at that.
  • Article about burnout in the games industry, quoting experts who will, as always, be ignored.
  • Leading the all-formats chart this week: still FIFA 06 across the board, except on the PC where it's in 7th place and the DS where it's in 6th. PC gamers are apparently more into some Black and White 2, while the top 3 DS games are all Nintendogs. Fun doggy demographics: the Labrador SKU outsold the Dachshund SKU, which outsold the Chihuahua SKU.
