MCV issue 359 (21 October 2005)
Here's another issue of British trade weekly MCV. This is the eighth of a consecutive run of 17 unpreserved issues that I'll be scanning over the coming months, running from September 2005 to the end of December — a period that includes the launch of the Xbox 360, the European release of the PSP, and the first public demo of the Wiimote.
In this issue:
- EA signs Steven Spielberg to create three original video games. #1 was Boom Blox, #2 was the never-finished LMNO, and I don't think we ever heard about the third. Spielberg's reputation never recovered.
- Signs this issue is from 2005: Little Britain and the Crazy Frog are both mentioned as popular properties with no trace of embarrassment.
- Sales of the Game Boy Micro, the white PSP and the Nintendo DS made up 85% of all Japanese hardware sales in September, but software sales are down.
- Game publishers are reported to be bidding for the rights to classic British horror movie studio Hammer. I don't think anything ever came out of this...?
- FIFA 06 still dominates the charts this week, with Tiger Woods 06 in second. The DS is still a Nintendogs 1-2-3, and weirdly Black and White 2 tops both the PC full price and PC budget price charts.
